A platform connecting those facing short-term emergencies with community members willing to give interest-free loans (Qard Hasana). Focused on local communities, anonymized to remove stigma, with open banking verification to assess ability to repay. When you can't make rent this month but will be fine next month—this is where you turn.

Key Features

  • Request or offer short-term interest-free loans
  • Open banking integration for affordability assessment
  • Anonymized requests to reduce stigma
  • Community/masjid-based guarantor system
  • Stripe payment integration
  • Option for lenders to forgive loans as charity
  • Campaign tracking with repayment timelines

The Problem

Emergencies don't respect budgets. A working professional might face an unexpected medical bill, a broken car, or a gap between jobs. They're not poor—they'll be fine in a few weeks—but they need cash now. Current options are brutal: high-interest credit cards, payday loans with predatory rates, or the humiliation of asking friends and family for money. Islamic teaching offers an alternative—Qard Hasana, the beautiful loan given without interest—but there's no infrastructure to connect those in need with those willing to lend.

The Solution

This platform creates the infrastructure for community-based interest-free lending. Those facing emergencies create loan requests with details and documentation. Requests can be anonymized—the community sees the need without knowing the person. Lenders contribute any amount toward campaigns. Open banking integration lets the platform assess whether someone genuinely needs help and whether they can realistically repay. If a borrower can't repay, lenders can extend deadlines or forgive the loan entirely—converting it to Sadaqah.

What Was Built

A functional web application with user dashboard showing lending activity (supported, active, returned), campaign creation for loan requests with documentation upload, Stripe integration for payment processing, open banking integration assessing income and spending patterns, and a repayment tracking and notification system. Live demo showed the full flow from request to contribution.

Technical Approach

Web application with Stripe for payment processing and open banking APIs for financial verification. The verification algorithm analyzes transaction history to identify regular income, essential expenses, and ability to absorb additional debt. Escrow mechanism holds funds until campaign completion.

Impact on the Ummah

This revives a Sunnah that has atrophied in modern life. The Prophet ﷺ said that giving a loan twice is equivalent to giving charity once—yet we've made it structurally difficult to practice. This platform makes it as easy to offer a Qard Hasana as it is to donate to a GoFundMe. The anonymization feature addresses a real barrier—many Muslims won't ask their community for help due to shame.

Universal Application

Short-term financial crises aren't unique to Muslims. The platform's model—community-based, interest-free, stigma-reduced lending—serves anyone. Immigrant communities, neighborhood associations, professional networks, or any group with shared trust and values can use this infrastructure.

Long-Term Vision

Community/masjid partnerships where local institutions can vouch for members. Direct payment to vendors (rent paid directly to landlords, medical bills paid to hospitals) to prevent misuse. Integration with Islamic financial institutions for larger loans.

What's Next

Refining fraud prevention, establishing community guarantor pilots, and exploring regulatory requirements for peer-to-peer lending in different jurisdictions.
